A special double-bill treat for ECM lovers...

Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko is a seminal figure in European jazz.  He makes a welcome return to the Barbican with the music from his just-released ECM recording Wislawa, and a brand new quartet that demonstrates his characteristic willingness to take aboard new ideas - the fruit of some years of living part-time in New York, where interaction with local players has brought him into an intensely creative collaboration with hotly-tipped Cuban-born pianist David Virelles, bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Gerald Cleaver.

Tonight Stanko and his New York Quartet present a mix of soulful free ballads and pure boppish energy, inspired by and dedicated to the memory of Polish poet, essayist and Nobel Laureate Wisława Symborska.

'A dream ticket jazz meeting between a cutting edge European legend and an equally honed triumvirate of pioneering New York based youth' Guardian

Composer and multi-instrumentalist John Surman is a key figure in a generation of European jazz musicians who expanded the international horizons of jazz during the last three decades of the twentieth century. A stalwart of the ECM record label, and long acknowledged as an improviser of world class, he is composer of a body of work that extends far beyond the perceived boundaries of the jazz repertoire.

Saltash Bells, is inspired by the West Country of his English childhood, memories of special places – and sounds. The title track refers to the echoes of bell ringing from Saltash church resounding around the Tamar River valley, at the border of Cornwall and Devon. Whistman's Wood, meanwhile, evokes the mysterious petrified forest of Dartmoor ... And so it goes, ancient haunts inspiring vivid new music.

Saltash Bells was recently awarded the Jazz Fm Award for Album of the Year.

'Surman's career has been marked by a unique personal vision and integrity.  Saltash Bells is yet another highpoint in that life's work' Jazzwise
