Amongst the most fecund of 20th-century composers, Heitor Villa-Lobos was as prolific in his choral works as he was in other genres and this concert presents a selection – much of it music rarely-heard outside his native Brazil. The programme includes some of the works inspired by Brazilian folk traditions – such as the Lendas Amerindias (or Amerindian Legends) – the Latin sacred music composed for the Catholic liturgy – including settings of the Ave Maria, Pater Noster, Bendite Sabedoria and other devotional texts – and concludes with the work that is undoubtedly both his choral masterpiece and a classic of the modern choral repertoire: Bachiana Brasileira IX which is nothing less than a highly virtuosic prelude and fugue for unaccompanied voices.

The concert will finish at approximately 6.15pm
