Szymanowski Symphony No 1 Szymanowski Violin Concerto No 1 Brahms Symphony No 1
Valery Gergiev conductor Janine Jansen violin London Symphony Orchestra
Szymanowski’s First Symphony is drenched in the evocative Romanticism of the German orchestral masters, Wagner and Strauss, before him. Szymanowski’s Violin Concerto No 1 draws inspiration from the Polish poem Noc Majowa (Night Gathering): ‘fireflies kiss the wild rose – while death flickers over the pond and plays a wanton song’. 20 years in the making, Brahms’ First Symphony was one of the most eagerly awaited in musical history.
