Mendelssohn: Elijah - Overture

Mendelssohn: Elijah - Oh rest in the Lord

Mendelssohn: Elijah - Lord God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel

Mendelssohn's Biblical epic is a thrilling fusion of the Baroque oratorio tradition so admired by the composer, and the 19th century taste for high drama; it is no surprise that the work's premiere, in Birmingham, proved an immense triumph. So should this performance: tonight's soloists represent a superb cross-section of British vocal excellence. Simon Keenlyside combines a riveting stage presence with a baritone voice of great power and humanity, Catherine Wyn-Rogers is a highly communicative oratorio interpreter, while award successes in the past decade propelled both soprano Lucy Crowe and tenor Andrew Kennedy rapidly to the forefront of the younger generation of singers now carving names for themselves as artists of individuality and vocal excellence.
