Purcell arr Steven Stucky Funeral Music for Queen Mary Mozart Piano Concerto No 23 Bruckner Symphony No 7
Bernard Haitink conductor Maria João Pires piano London Symphony Orchestra Purcell’s portentous Funeral Music for Queen Mary for the Queen’s funeral in 1695 was the last music he provided for a royal occasion before his own death later that year. In contrast, Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 23 is one of his most cheerful and spritely works. Often dubbed a ‘eulogy to Wagner’, Bruckner’s Symphony No 7 is occasionally nicknamed the ‘Lyric’ symphony and is filled with high drama, full, lush harmonies, and themes that form spectral echoes from one movement to the next.
