Der Freischütz, usually translated as ‘The Marksman’ or ‘The Freeshooter’, is heralded as one of the cornerstones of Romantic opera and draws on traditional German folk tunes for much of its music. The opera’s sinister, fairytale inspiration tells the story of magic bullets, invisible spirits and pacts with the devil, and includes the chilling Wolf’s Glen scene in which demonic, other-worldly screeches accompany the fateful casting of the hunter’s seven deadly bullets.

Change of soloist
The role of Kaspar will now be sung by Lars Woldt, as Falk Struckmann has had to withdraw due to illness. The LSO is very grateful to Mr Woldt for agreeing to step in at such short notice.
