Symphony No 3 is Mahler’s hymn to the natural world and contains his attempt to musically encapsulate every aspect of creation, recalling the composer’s famous conversation with Sibelius in which Mahler proclaimed: ‘A symphony must be like the world – it must contain everything’. Indeed, as Mahler met his friend Bruno Walter off the ferry, Bruno looked up at the alpine view around them and was swiftly told that there was ‘No use looking up there, that’s all been composed by me’.
