Haydn Symphony No 99 Beethoven Piano Concerto No 1 Nielsen Symphony No 6
Sir Colin Davis conductor Mitsuko Uchida piano London Symphony Orchestra
Beethoven premiered his Piano Concerto in Prague in 1798 – as a prodigious soloist he gave himself grand and daring challenges. Haydn composed his 99th Symphony for a visit to London in 1793; it includes a strikingly elegiac wind choir. When Nielsen began work on his final symphony (1925), he thought it might prove ‘more amiable and smooth’ than his previous works. It is certainly irradiated by sunlight and shadows.
