Jean Epstein's beautiful film set on the harsh Breton coast.
Jean Epstein is best known for his haunting, Gothic classic The Fall of the House of Usher (1928). Finis Terrae was a complete departure: a Realist documentary-fiction, filmed on location on the wild coast of Brittany.
Finis Terrae depicts the harsh life of the Breton fishermen and coastal kelp-harvesters. But it’s also a compelling human story of friendship and misunderstanding, told with a wonderfully artistic eye, stunning scenery and effects way ahead of their time.
The Curt Collective's daring new score uses oboe, clarinet, trombone, guitars, percussion, electronics and voices, spoken and sung.
France 1929 Dir. Jean Epstein 88 min.
