Quite probably the best rom-com to feature a man, a woman and a coma since While You Were Sleeping, this fresh-faced, sweet film adapted from real life tells the story of how Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley) met his wife, Emily V Gordon.

After quickly falling in love, stand-up comedian Kumail (Nanjiani) and student Emily (Zoe Kazan) come to a crossroads when they both realise that to be together, Kumail must defy his family, who are desperate for him to enter into an arranged marriage and keep family tradition alive.

The couple breaks up and yet, when Emily falls unexpectedly and seriously ill, Kumail cannot keep away. Making cautious amends with her parents, Beth (Holly Hunter) and Terry (Ray Romano), Kumail reaches an understanding about how to square the different aspects of his identity.

Funny, thoughtful and with terrific performances all round, especially from Hunter and Romano, The Big Sick is a paean to family and finding your own way.
