Frantz (12A)

Newcomer Paula Beer makes her name in this gorgeous-looking post-war drama, from French director François Ozon (Potiche, Swimming Pool).

In a small German town, Anna (Beer) is in mourning for her fiancé Frantz, killed in The Great War. When a mysterious man begins to appear by the grave, he is revealed to be Adrien (Pierre Niney), a former French soldier who has come to pay his respects to a fallen friend. A subtle romance blooms between the pair, but it soon becomes clear that Adrien is keeping an important secret.

Beginning in a sombre black and white, when the characters – and Anna especially – begin to feel joy, or love, or comfort – the screen floats into full colour in a way that’s not intrusive or distracting, but a beautifully clever way to see their inner lives. Ozon saves some dramatic twists to the very end that elevate this period drama into an intriguing emotional experience.
