In rural Turkey, five headstrong, beautiful sisters - Sonay, Selma, Ece, Nur and Lale - are punished after daring to play with a group of boys at the beach. Forced to leave school, dress modestly and learn to be housewives by their conservative grandmother and uncles, the girls struggle with the huge change to their lives, and cope in different ways.

This is an incredible debut feature by Deniz Gamze Ergüven, who confronts the weight of an oppressive society with moments of hope, humour and the bond of sisterhood.

All the performances here are astonishing, not least Günes Sensoy as the youngest sister Lale, who powers the story. And, there's a brilliant soundtrack from Warren Ellis. An extraordinary film.
