Itís a joy to see Kate Beckinsale and ChloŽ Sevingny play opposite one another in a Whit Stillman film, eighteen years after the cool and cult The Last Days of Disco. Based on an unfinished Jane Austen novella, this isnít your typical Regency drama.
Beckinsale is Lady Susan Vernon, a socialite looking to keep her social standing by remarrying well and making a good match for her daughter too. Not your average Austen heroine, Lady Susan is whip-smart, ambitious, flirtatious and brilliantly unapologetic. Sevingny plays Alicia Johnson, Lady Susanís American confidante and ally in a subtly dangerous world.
With elegant characters, juicy one-liners and tart ripostes, Stillman and Austen make the perfect filmic companions.
After the film, we're thrilled to have director Whit Stillman join us for a ScreenTalk to discuss the film, hosted by Dave Calhoun.
