Opening with a mugging by a gang of bad-ass teenage girls, an altercation in a psychedelic nightclub, and a nocturnal girl-on-girl knife-fight, this hallucinatory Japanese girl-gang flick is a disreputable delight.

The fashion-savviest pick in our season, it stars cult film legend Meiko Kaji (Lady Snowblood) as Mako, the impeccably-styled leader of the all-girl street gang the Alleycats, who share territory with the thuggish boy-gang the Eagles. When one Eagle loses his girlfriend to a mixed-race Japanese man, their leader starts a violent campaign against ‘half-breeds’, and insists the girls toe the racial-purity line. But the defiant Mako has eyes for a newly-arrived half-breed hunk, and isn’t about to let anyone tell her girls what to do…

Featuring the best hat in cinema history, the best use of flaming Coke bottles as improvised Molotov cocktails, and the rousing battle cry ‘I’ll show you what a bad girl can do!’, this is an unforgettable slice of pulp fiction.
