West Side Story is perhaps Leonard Bernstein’s most popular work and in 1984, 27 years after its premiere, he finally conducted the first complete album of his masterpiece with the singers of his choice.

Kiri Te Kanawa (Maria), José Carreras (Tony), Tatiana Troyanos (Anita) and Kurt Ollmann (Riff) feature in Christopher Swann’s film which documents one week of the recording process in a New York studio alternating rehearsal footage with complete final takes and offers a fascinating insight into this major figure at work.

US 1985 Dir. Christopher Swann 89 min.

Following the screening Kristjan Järvi conducts Leonard Bernstein’s Candide with Andrew Staples and the London Symphony Orchestra in the Barbican Hall at 7pm.
