Japanese comics – or Manga – are at the centre stage of global popular culture in the digital age. Their imagery and ideas have had a massive, inescapable influence on the creation of a vibrant and iconic visual language that spans all types of media, both in their printed or digital formats and through adaptations into film and television, gaming, cosplay, and merchandising.
Mangasia is the first exhibition to explore the nexus of creativity in comic art across Asia, and the ways in which these ‘Wonderlands of Asian Comics’ connect and contrast in all their diversity and dynamism. From historical roots to the most recent digital innovations, Mangasia presents an overview of Asian comic history by spotlighting key creators and characters, magazines and graphic novels, multi-media and related issues.
Mangasia will present the largest ever selection of original artworks from Asian comics alongside their printed, mass-produced forms, and will reveal the creative processes that underlie their production, from scripts, sketches and layouts to finished pages. With a specific focus on the boost of new creative possibilities through the accelerated development of digital technologies, Mangasia will also reveal how 21st-century artists are using digital tools to transform the creation and consumption of comics.
