Handel’s Tamerlano

The English Concert

A close-up portrait of Bejun Mehta

‘An evening of delightfully and unwaveringly engaging theatre’ was how Opera Today described the previous instalment of The English Concert’s Handel opera cycle. Expect more of the same in Tamerlano.

Tamerlano, Emperor of the Tartars, lives in decadent splendour and absolute power, treating the hearts and lives of his captives as playthings. Handel wrote his opera in 1724 for the greatest voices of the day, and it’s performed tonight by some of the most exciting baroque voices of our own time. Bejun Mehta, Sophie Bevan, Michael Spyres and the sensational Jakub Józef Orliński – the breakdancing countertenor – head a cast that shines every bit as brilliantly as Handel would have expected.

This performance will end at approximately 10.15pm, including two 20 minute intervals.
