Ligeti Quartet: Different Trains

Steve Reich at 90

Ligeti Quartet

Ed Miles

Ligeti Quartet bring Reich’s Different Trains into sharp focus alongside Adams, Sokolovic and a world premiere by Ben Nobuto.

The award-winning Ligeti Quartet explore music shaped by rhythm, memory and technology. The programme opens with selections from John Adams’ John’s Book of Alleged Dances and Ana Sokolovic’s Commedia dell’arte, before a world premiere by Ben Nobuto, commissioned by the Barbican. Written for string quartet and tape, Nobuto’s new work builds on Reich’s techniques while exploring new ways for live performers to interact with electronics.

After the interval comes Steve Reich’s Different Trains, a landmark work inspired by Reich’s childhood train journeys during the Second World War. Voices of train conductors, Holocaust survivors and Reich’s governess are woven into the live strings. For this performance, the tape has been remastered for spatialised sound, bringing fresh depth to this Grammy-winning classic.

There will be a 20 minute interval, and the performance is expected to end around 9.15pm.

A note from Ben Nobuto

"I’m really excited to be writing a piece for the Ligeti Quartet, accompanying Reich’s Different Trains. Reich’s influence on my music has been so profound and Different Trains is one of my favourite pieces in the repertoire so it’s a huge honour to be paired together on a programme. Like Different Trains, my piece will be written for string quartet and tape, building on the techniques founded by Reich but also exploring newer technologies and different ways of interacting with tape. The combination of live performers and fixed electronics is central to how I think about music, how to blend acoustic and pre-recorded sounds to create new, hybrid textures, and how to leave space for human expression and freedom within such a rigid structure. It’s a tension that feels more and more relevant in the face of advances in tech and AI. I feel very grateful to collaborate with the Ligeti Quartet again; I first worked with them as a student seven years ago and so much has changed in my own practice and also the world, so it feels special to revisit this relationship."
