Historjá – Stitches for Sapmí + ScreenTalk (PG*)

The Old Ways

A woman looks out over a herd of raindeer.

A documentary portrait of the extraordinary textile artist and activist Britta Marakatt-Labba.

Britta Marakatt-Labba was born to a Sámi family of reindeer herders in Northern Sweden. For decades, her needle and thread have represented the vast, calm snowscapes of her northern homeland and carried stories of Sámi mythology, childhood memories and history – political, and domestic.

Taking as its starting-point the huge 24-metre-long embroidery Historjá (2003–2007), the piece that first introduced her to international audiences, this film brings us into Britta’s world, and allows us to hear directly from the artist, in her own words.

We are honoured to have Britta here in person after the film for a ScreenTalk with director Thomas Jackson and Barbican Curator Lotte Johnson.

This event is made possible thanks to the Swedish Embassy.
