The Chronology of Water (18)

Kristen Stewart's extraordinary directorial debut is a visceral adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch's beloved memoir: the messy chronicle of abuse and what it takes to survive.

Poetic and unflinching, this journey through Yuknavitch's life processes childhood abuse, first love, addiction and grief.

Imogen Poots gives a raw and magnetic performance as a young Lidia, experiencing abuse at the hands of her father, alongside her sister and depressive mother. Finding salvation in swim camps, Lidia secures a college scholarship that offers a way out.

When she gets there, she self-destructs with alcohol, drugs, exploring BDSM with her swim coach and her disdain for her gentle boyfriend (Earl Cave).

Her next salvation? Writing. And so the reinventions continue to roll on.

Stewart commands strong, intelligent performances in this impressionistic and confrontational narrative of trauma and resilience.
