Spirit Moves Us: A Sound and Movement Session with Seyi Adelekun

Young Barbican Events

Performer Seyi Adelekun on stage

Join Seyi Adelekun for an embodied session exploring Black ecology, collective wellbeing and imagining.

Together we ask, what lives in the in between, when bodies are in relationship with land, ancestors, spirits, materials and each other?

Using movement and sound scores, the Barbican Conservatory will become a space for playful encounters as we commune with plant energy. Through practices of sensing, deep listening and herbal rituals, we will explore rhythm, intimacy and sensuality, moving between gathering and dispersal while inhabiting ourselves and the environment around us.

No previous experience is needed. Bring your curiosity, openness and willingness to connect and express yourself authentically.

Facilitator

Seyi Adelekun is a London-based interdisciplinary artist of Yoruba-Nigerian heritage. Weaving together installation, performance, sound and social practice, their work serves as a medium for world-building liberatory futures by archiving and sharing ancestral wisdom. Drawing on principles of planetary healing, Seyi explores spirituality as a vital force in resisting environmental racism and ecological degradation. Their work engages diverse ways of knowing and relating through oral traditions, as well as embodied and land-based practices. In doing so, they create spaces for deep listening and collective ritual, honouring the interwoven lives of land, bodies and spirit.

Seyi Adelekun has exhibited and performed at the Sainsbury Center, Whitechapel Gallery, South London Gallery, KLA ART Festival, Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail, London Festival of Architecture and London Design Festival. They have undertaken residencies at Somerset House, The Place, G.A.S. Foundation, Iniva / Stuart Hall Library, and 32 Degrees East. As well as facilitated workshops for the Barbican Centre and developed projects with Assemble Studio, Artangel, and Tate Britain.
