My Father's Shadow (12A)

Senior Community Cinema

A man carries his son on his hip, standing in the ocean

An intimate portrait of a family navigating the political turbulence of 1993 Lagos Nigeria, makes for a profound debut from the British-Nigerian director Akinola Davies Jr..

Lyrical and emotionally resonant, two young boys reconnect with their father during a single, transformative day.

Remi and Akin, played by real life brothers Godwin Chiemerie Egbo and Chibuike Marvelous Egbo, accompany their father into the city to collect his long overdue salary. Around them is a nation in flux, caught in a pivotal election that promises a shift from military rule to democracy.

What unfurls is a rich journey of paternal distance and political uncertainty, commanded by the riveting performance of Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù as Florian.

Having created works for the likes of Gucci, Louis Vuitton and music videos for Kae Tempest and Blood Orange, this is Davies Jr.'s debut feature. It was the winner of the Caméra d’Or Special Mention at Cannes 2025.
