Animated Jazz band singing

An animated love story set in the jazz nightclubs of Havana and New York, driven by Afro-Cuban rhythms.

Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, (edging out Steven Spielberg’s Tintin and Pixar’s Cars 2) this Spanish-produced film focuses on the recollections of an exhausted shoeshine man in Havana. His memory brings back a love story set in the nightclubs of Havana and New York, charting his love affair with a singer across different continents and decades.

Propelled by Bebo Valdés' smoky jazz score, Chico & Rita captures the 1990s obsession with Cuba's 'rediscovered' musicians, a phenomenon embodied by the Buena Vista Social Club's success.

The film also features animated cameos from jazz legends Woody Herman, Charlie Parker, Chano Pozo, Nat King Cole, and Tito Puente.
