It Was Just an Accident (12A)

Relaxed Screening

three people and a van on a dessert.

Veteran Iranian auteur and rights campaigner Jafar Panahi returns with a brave thriller of revenge and state violence, that won him the Palme d’Or at Cannes.

Vahid, an Azerbaijani auto-mechanic, was imprisoned and interrogated while blindfolded by Iranian authorities. When he encounters a man he believes to be his former torturer, he kidnaps him. His only means of identification is the distinctive squeak of the man's prosthetic leg.

Unable to confirm Eghbal's identity on his own, Vahid recruits others who were imprisoned, to try verify their captor. This act of vengeance escalates into something more volatile and unpredictable. From a chance encounter to a chain reaction, this quick-paced thriller explores how far we'll go for justice, and asks where the tenuous line between right and wrong sits.

No stranger to unjust imprisonment himself, Jafar Panahi's (Taxi Tehran, No Bears) latest was submitted as France's International Film nominee at the 2026 Oscars.
