Girlfriends + ScreenTalk with director Tracy Choi (15*)

Queer East Festival 2026

Two women, one with short dyed orange hair and one with long dark hair, hug and smile as they walk outside.

This female-centred coming-of-age drama from director Tracy Choi follows a filmmaker from Macau as she questions how experiences from her past have shaped her present.

Although she has already directed a feature film, Lok (Fish Liew) finds her life remains unstable: her next project has stalled, and her girlfriend Bei (Jennifer Yu) is pushing for them to settle down. Facing multiple pressures, Lok revisits different moments from her past – studying in Taiwan at 22; growing up in Macau at 17 – exploring what it means to be true to oneself.

Unusual in its geographic scope, use of a reverse-chronological timeline, and apparently autobiographical elements, Choi's Girlfriends is a romantic, intelligent reflection on queer identity.

We are thrilled to have Tracy Choi join us for this special ScreenTalk.

In Cantonese and Mandarin with English subtitles.
