Preview: Peter Hujar's Day (12A)

A man and a woman sit on a bed against a yellow wall

Be the first to see the gentle portrayal of a queer photographer in this found transcript between photographer Peter Hujar (Ben Wishaw) and Linda Rosenkrantz.

A celebrated photographer for his images documenting queer life and often associated with Andy Warhol and Robert Mapplethorpe; Peter Hujar's sitters were some of the most culturally significant figures of 70s New York, including Susan Sontag and Fran Lebowitz.

In 1974, Hujar took part in a documentary nonfiction project by author Linda Rosenkrantz, in which he went around to her apartment and recounted into a tape machine everything that happened to him in one particular day.

The tape had gone missing, but the typescript survived, published three years ago as Peter Hujar’s Day and now filmed by director Ira Sachs as a verbatim-cinema piece entirely within Rosenkrantz’s apartment.

Ben Whishaw and Rebecca Hall's performances are elegant and intimate, gently portraying an iconic artist and the time he lived.
