Romería (15)

Parent & Baby Screening

People standing together

A leading voice in Spanish arthouse cinema, Carla Simón’s third feature completes her semi-autobiographical trilogy, a body of work rooted in memory and her own upbringing.

Set on the Galician coast in the early 2000s, the film follows eighteen-year-old Marina, who travels to Vigo to obtain her estranged father’s death certificate so she can apply to film school. Reconnecting with his side of the family, she encounters a legacy of shame and secrecy surrounding his death.

Guided by her mother’s youthful diary entries, Marina begins to piece together her parents’ past and uncover the truth behind the family’s secrecy.

A master of familial dynamics, Simón captures intimate gatherings with striking nuance, revealing unspoken tensions through glances and gesture. Paired with Hélène Louvart’s sun-drenched, poetic cinematography, Romería evokes the nostalgia and restlessness of adolescence while tracing a deeply personal journey of self-discovery.
