Queen at Sea (15)

Parent & Baby Screening

A woman and a man talking

This English drama explores the harrowing reality of autonomy and independence in the face of dementia, with Juliette Binoche and Anna Calder-Marshall.

Amanda (Juliette Binoche, Chocolat) and her stepfather, Martin (Tom Courtenay), confront a difficult decision about Amanda’s mother, Leslie (Anna Calder-Marshall), who is in the advanced stages of dementia. They disagree over whether Leslie is still capable of making important decisions for herself and, ultimately, what is in her best interests.

Their disagreement raises a bigger question: if Leslie can no longer decide for herself, who should have the right to decide on her behalf? Her spouse, her daughter, or an institution? As Amanda and Martin are forced to make increasingly difficult choices, the consequences begin to spiral beyond their control.

Calder-Marshall and Courtenay reunite having played Ophelia and Hamlet in 1968.

Lance Hammer's powerful film presents an unsentimental yet highly empathetic meditation on the limits of love.
