Before winning the Palme d’Or for bittersweet romp Anora, writer/director Sean Baker helmed this colourful drama following a young girl and her mother, living in a roadside motel in Florida.

Six-year-old Moonee (Brooklynn Prince) spends her days lounging with her young mother Halley (Bria Vinaite), annoying the kindly hotel manager Bobby (Willem Dafoe) and exploring with her friends. When Halley turns to illegal activities for cash, she’s put on the radar of social services, jeopardising her life with Moonee. The pair are wiley, resourceful and endearing, but will this be too much to weather?  

Bold, brash and beautiful, Baker’s kinetic drama is infused with all the exuberance of youth, as well as the helplessness a lack of autonomy can bring. Moonee parades the candy-coloured, tourist traps with abandon, sneaking into no-go areas, begging strangers for ice cream and having a ball. At the same time, the stark inequality existing between locals and tourists brutally underlines their daily life.
