Poetic Justice (15)

Janet Jackson stares out at the dusty road ahead

Janet Jackson and Tupac Shakur share electric on-screen chemistry in John Singleton’s cult road movie about the romance between an aspiring musician and a grieving poet.

Janet Jackson makes an acclaimed film debut as Justice, a poet and hairdresser reeling from the trauma of her boyfriend’s death. Coaxed by her best friend (future Oscar-winner Regina King) into a road trip to Oakland, she clashes with Lucky (Tupac Shakur), a charismatic postal worker facing struggles of his own, who is along for the ride. Tension gradually gives way to romance as the two discover more about each other.

The film has become a cult hit, owing to the smouldering chemistry between Jackson and Shakur, the poetry, written for the film by Maya Angelou, and its marvellous soundtrack, by TLC, Usher, Babyface and Jackson’s global hit Again.

Different in tone from Singleton’s Boyz n the Hood, Poetic Justice is a compelling, poignant and funny romantic drama, and highly quotable.
