Pierrot le Fou (15)

Outdoor Cinema

A man and a woman sit in front of a blue doorway, looking away from each other.

Jean-Luc Godard is at his anarchic best in this French New Wave classic: an electrifying lovers-on-the-run caper bursting with colour, energy and provocation.

One of the most explosive films from the French New Wave, Pierrot le Fou is a wild and dangerous road trip with crime thriller elements, starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Anna Karina.

A Parisian married man quits his bourgeois life and runs off with the babysitter. They head to the south of France, but they are followed…

The film sees Godard at his most playful. Along the way, bombarded with satire, politics (Godard’s disgust at the Vietnam War surfaces throughout), anti-bourgeois critique and pop culture, which culminates in one of the most-discussed endings in cinema history.

Despite being booed at its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, Pierrot le Fou has since influenced directors such as Quentin Tarantino and Chantal Akerman, and remains Godard’s most enjoyable film.

In French, with English subtitles
