Outdoor Cinema

Iranian football fans watch the game nervously

The World Cup may end in July, but our Outdoor Cinema is the place to find your football fix, with Jafar Panahi’s comedy about young female football fans in Tehran.

A group of football-obsessed young girls hatches an audacious plan to infiltrate the national stadium in Tehran—where women are banned from attending matches—to watch the World Cup qualifying game.

Disguising themselves as men and dodging soldiers, the girls attempt to sneak into the stadium...

Panahi’s feminist film takes an original angle to denounce the place of women in Iranian society: football fandom. Cheekily sneering at the police and cheering loudly, its female protagonists, full of vigour, are completely captivating.

Cleverly filmed at the actual stadium during Iran’s qualifying Match against Bahrain in 2006, the electricity and excitement pour out of the setting and the young girls. Though Panahi was reportedly ready for either result, the outcome brings the film to its glorious denouement.
