Atlantics (12A)

Outdoor Cinema

Two people dance together closely in a dark, neon lit club.

Mati Diop’s haunting fantasy drama sees a group of unpaid construction workers disappear at sea after going in search of a better life abroad, in this spellbinding Cannes Grand Prix winner.

In the suburbs of Dakar, Ada (Mame Bineta Sane) has fallen for construction worker Soleiman (Ibrahima Traoré) despite being betrothed to another man. When Soleiman’s boss refuses to pay his workers, the crew decide to set sail to earn some money overseas. After a while, strange things begin to happen in the town at night, drawing the attention of a police detective who soon becomes embroiled in the whole mysterious affair.

Diop’s ghostly work comes to life at night, with eerie neon green club lights sparking out of the darkness. In this poetic romantic drama, the ocean looms over all; the waves at once symbolising loss and return, the horrors of the transatlantic slave trade, and a connection between the living and the dead. Rarely has a film seemed more perfect for our outdoor cinema screen, than this visually arresting, hypnotic tale.
