Nouvelle Vague (12A)

A young woman in a embracing a young man on the street

Richard Linklater’s reimagination of Jean-Luc Godard’s making of Breathless is a love letter to the legend of the French New Wave.

In Nouvelle Vague, his 33rd film, American filmmaker Richard Linklater explores the making of Godard's À Bout de Souffle (Breathless), shot in summer 1959.

The film begins at Cannes Film Festival, where Godard conceived the project alongside filmmakers Claude Chabrol and François Truffaut, whose film Les Quatre Cents Coups (The 400 Blows) had already become a resounding success.

Beyond documenting Godard's vision, Linklater's comedy-drama captures an entire generation of French New Wave directors and the creative spirit that defined their era: a commitment to spontaneous dialogue, improvisation, chaos in creating and finding poetry in ordinary life.
