In The Cut (18)

My Twisted Valentine

Meg Ryan and Mark Ruffalo kiss in a forest

Jane Campion’s take on the erotic thriller is her most provocative and polarising film; peering into the very darkest corners of desire.

Meg Ryan is cast against type as Frannie Avery, a schoolteacher who meets Detective Malloy (Mark Ruffalo) while he is investigating the brutal murder of a young woman in her neighbourhood.

Slowly, she is drawn into a liberating but disturbing affair: as the passion increases, so do Frannie’s suspicions that Malloy may himself be the killer.

Based on the erotic novel by Susanna Moore, and co-written with her, In the Cut has recently been reappraised as one of Campion’s best films, subverting conventional archetypes of female victim and femme fatale, and tackling the difficult subject of fear, and its erotic potential.
