Mueda, Memoria e Massacre + Soul in the Eye (15)

Project a Black Planet

A man with glasses on

Two very different diasporic encounters, exploring history and the role of art-making in communicating legacies of rebellion and resistance.

Soul in the Eye, directed by Zózimo Bulbul, is a foundational work of Black Brazilian cinema. Set to music by John Coltrane, it features an exuberant performance celebrating Black Brazilian history and traces a diasporic journey from the hardships of the slave trade to freedom after abolition, through an interconnected dialogue of dance, music and radical politics.

Mueda, Memória e Massacre, by Ruy Guerra, explores radical politics and history through an annual performance in Mueda, a Mozambican village. Elders re-enact a stand-off between villagers and Portuguese colonial officers that resulted in the massacre of the local protestors, using surreal elements including an exaggerated nose to depict the Portuguese. The film highlights storytelling as a collective act of remembrance and resistance.
