Masquerading Institutions

A sculpture-building workshop with Jacob V Joyce

People in a field holding up a large balooning sheet

Explore masquerade and carnival as languages of Pan-African resistance by creating a sculpture out of found materials in this free creative workshop with artist Jacob V Joyce.

Themed around masquerade as a way to reclaim and subvert power, this workshop will bring together artists to create sculptures using found materials.

Inspired by the African diasporic tradition of carnival and ephemeral assemblages, this workshop explores masquerade as a way to remedy and release points of colonial tension.

Drawing upon their experience working with ritual reenactment societies (Kambule/Canboulay) in Trinidad & Tobago, and their long-standing practice as a community-facing artist, Jacob V Joyce invites participants to expand on these themes through craft and play.
