The Morning (Jutro) (15*)

Hidden Figures: Mladomir Puriša Đorđević

A man and a woman stand in front of a bare tree, looking at each other

The third and best known part of Mladomir Puriša Đorđević’s war films, this landmark feature of the Yugoslav Black Wave confronts the human cost of warfare and the legacy of an era.

Picking up from where the events of Đorđević’s previous film The Dream left off – the first days of liberation – a former soldier (Ljubiša Samardžić) must face a new life while reckoning with enemy collaborators and orders to execute traitors, as the battle within springs to the surface.

A fine meditation on war and peace, or rather war in peacetime, the film explores the effects of conflict on the human soul. Samardžić won the Best Actor award at Venice for his extraordinary performance, and the film remains a critical, provocative reflection on the struggle that freedom brings.

The screening on Tue 20 Jan features an introduction by season curator Dr Mina Radović.
