The Girl (Devojka) (15*)

Hidden Figures: Mladomir Puriša Đorđević

A black and white film still showing a man and woman riding on top of a vehicle.

The first of Mladomir Puriša Đorđević’s war films takes the form of a diary written like a stream of consciousness and announces its director as one of the most original cinematic voices of the 1960s.

A deceptively simple tale of young girl (Milena Dravić) falling in love with a partisan (Đorđević regular Ljubiša Samardžić) – told from several perspectives, including a photographer and German officer – gives way to a powerful reflection on human nature, where war becomes suspended. Its poetic and dreamlike tone creates a surreal cinematic space where the living and the dead speak, and enemies do not exist.

The Girl features an early performance by acting icon Dravić, who has real chemistry with Samardžić, revealing the talents of a duo who would subsequently become a much-loved romantic ensemble in Yugoslav cinema.

The screening on Wed 14 Jan features an introduction by season curator Dr Mina Radović.
