The Dream (San) (15*)

Hidden Figures: Mladomir Puriša Đorđević

A black and white film still showing a man and woman in profile, talking to each other.

A fascinating example of historical filmmaking told with surrealist flourishes, Mladomir Puriša Đorđević’s powerful filmcaptures the experience of the Second World War as few others could.

It’s 1941. Europe is occupied and only the Serbian cities of Čačak and Užice maintain their freedom. But war comes knocking and a couple’s dreams of a better future blossoms as we discover the power of love in impossible circumstances.

Blending tradition and modernity, The Dream was nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and proves existentialist cinema at its best, with sequences comparable to Andrei Tarkovsky’s masterpiece Andrei Rublev, made in the same year.

The screening on Thu 15 Jan features an introduction by season curator Dr Mina Radović.
