Noon (Podne) (15*)

Hidden Figures: Mladomir Puriša Đorđević

In the foreground, a man stands with his back to us, in front of a barrier in the road. On the other side of the barrier is another man, facing him. Behind him is a tank.

Still one of the most beautiful colour films ever shot in Yugoslavia, Mladomir Puriša Đorđević’s final war film is a lyrical mosaic of people’s lives in Belgrade during the spring of 1948.

A shoe-shiner on Belgrade’s Slavija Square is our guide in Đorđević’s film about the eve of the Tito-Stalin split, as manifestations in the Soviet Cultural Centre unfold and young Neda (Neda Arnerić) marries the Russian Mishko (Faruk Begoli). The film boasts excellent performances from its cast of well-known Yugoslav actors.

Noon explores the hopes for a future that never was, a society out of time and place. A reminder that all things are possible, the film is a great tribute to the acting profession and an outstanding conclusion to Mladomir Puriša Đorđević’s war tetralogy.

The screening on Thu 22 Jan features an introduction by season curator Dr Mina Radović.
