Government Inspector

Guildhall School of Music & Drama

Someone walking up a staircase half in red and half in white. The person walking up the stairs wears a red hat and a white coat

The news that a government inspector is on his way throws a small Russian town into chaos, as its corrupt officials scramble to cover their tracks.

A simple case of mistaken identity spirals into farce, exposing vanity, hypocrisy and greed in this razor-sharp satire from the grandfather of Ukrainian drama.

David Harrower’s acclaimed version of The Government Inspector premiered at Warwick Arts Centre before transferring to the Young Vic, London.

The production features haze, strobe lights and potentially loud noises, including possible gunshots. It includes adult content, including strong, abusive language and ableist and classist references. There are scenes of a sexual nature, including predatory behaviour, and references to suicide and physical punishment. The production also includes depictions of drunkenness and smoking.

‘Gloriously grotesque and brilliantly funny.‘
