Black British identity is still forming. While we draw from African and Caribbean traditions, many of our lives are lived in a distinctly British context that has not yet been fully ritualised. This workshop invites participants to step into the role of “future ancestors” - to consider what it means to create practices that hold memory, build community and offer continuity in a society that often disrupts it.
Combining cultural analysis with hands-on design, participants will begin developing a ritual of their own - from rites of passage and grief rituals to communal meals or new traditions that respond to the realities of Black life in Britain today to be carried on beyond the workshop.
This is a space for cultural authorship - not just to ask what we inherit, but to decide what we leave behind.
