Preview: Papaya + Pre-film collaging with Small World Cinema (U*)

Family Film Week

Animated. A small papaya seed with a smiling face sits on a background of vibrant orange and, behind that, green leaves.

A gorgeous riot of colour and charm, this non-verbal film follows the journey of a seed as it heads out into a changing world.

One plucky papaya seed reaches the ground and refuses to put down roots, deciding instead to adventure onwards deeper into the rainforest. But soon the seed must navigate the challenges of not only the natural world, but also the encroachment of agricultural activity on the surrounding areas.

A hit at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, this unusual film uses colourful collage and stunning animation to pose important questions about the environmental impact of humans as well as drawing the audience into the simple beauty of a plant life cycle.

Before the film, we’re delighted to welcome back Saskia and the team from Small World Cinema to support a free pre-film activity for families in our Cinema Café from 10am. Come and try out your own collage, using the film as your starting point to layer your own rainforest-inspired creation.

Age suggestion: 4+

This film has been locally classified as a U – but assessing suitability of any film is the responsibility of parent/guardian. Useful Information

The film screening will allow some movement and noise from young film fans, but please be mindful of other audience members' experience (and please switch off phones).

If your little one needs a break from the screening, please note, we have a selection of books & games in the Cinema Café for you to use.

The Family Film Week programme aims to screen films from a range of countries, styles and times, introducing a young audience to historical/archive content as well as the latest new releases. There is a suggested minimum age for films, but assessing suitability of any film is always the responsibility of the parent/guardian.
