A Focus on Gabriel Abrantes: Diamantino (15*)

Experiments in Film

A footballer moves with his football through a hazy pink cloudscape toward large brown furry creatures.

A delirious blend of political satire, fantasy spectacle and pop absurdity, Diamantino follows the world’s most beloved football star as his seemingly perfect life begins to unravel.

When a refugee crisis, nationalist conspiracies and his own dim-witted innocence collide, Diamantino embarks on an increasingly surreal journey involving cloned puppies, secret agents and global intrigue.

Directed by Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt, this Cannes Critics’ Week Grand Prize winner gleefully skewers celebrity culture, European politics and the mythology of sporting heroism. What begins as a parody of the cult of Cristiano Ronaldo spirals into an outrageous and unexpectedly tender exploration of identity, vulnerability and belonging.

Equal parts camp spectacle and political farce, Diamantino is a wildly inventive comedy that embraces the ridiculous while landing some surprisingly sharp satirical blows.

In Portuguese with English subtitles.
