Deconstructing Utopia: an evening of dialogue with Dr Jamille Pinheiro and Dr Catalina Mejía Moreno

A photo of a large, circular installation made from soil and clay, against the backdrop of the Barbican Sculpture Court residents' building.

Join us for an evening of dialogue with Dr Catalina Mejía Moreno and Dr Jamille Pinheiro Dias.

Rising from the war-torn wreckage of the City of London, the Barbican was conceived by architects Chamberlin, Powell and Bonn as a ‘city-within-a-city’ that places arts and culture at the centre of life.

This utopic conception of communal living, typical of post-war social idealism, centres the human experience. origo, by Delcy Morelos proposes a more expansive idea of community—one that extends beyond the human. Inspired by Andean building techniques and the architecture of the Yanomami people of the Amazon.

Through presentations and a moderated discussion, the resonances, overlaps and divergences between the Barbican and the installation will be explored. The event will broaden dialogues between UK and Latin American art and architecture, considering how spatial practices and frameworks can reshape ideas of community and coexistence.
