Creating Pan-African Cinema

Pan-African filmmaking with Jennifer Lauren Martin

Still from a film portraying a young black woman looking towards the camera

What does filmmaking through Pan-Africanist frameworks look like? Work with materials from Stuart Hall’s Constituting an Archive and The June Givanni PanAfrican Cinema Archive to create a new project.

What does it look like to create a sense of archiving through film? How can cinema hold time? Who can we learn from to explore Pan-African techniques of filmmaking?

In this creative workshop with Jennifer Lauren Martin, you will explore methods used across Pan-African cinema to activate your own personal materials and create a new film project.

Drawing from Stuart Hall’s Constituting an Archive and materials from The June Givanni PanAfrican Cinema Archives, participants will engage with the ‘living archive’ - an unfinished and open-ended process of archiving - to develop imaginative filmmaking processes that can be used across narrative, documentary, and artist moving image.

By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with a collective framework and early stages of a film idea, ready to be put into action.

Age guidance: 16+
