Atomic War Bride (Rat) (15)

Cold War Visions

A black and white film still showing a man in a hazmat suit and protective gear, and a woman in distress reaching for him.

An underseen gem from the dawn of the Cold War and co-written by Italian Neorealist filmmaker Cesare Zavattini, Veljko Bulajić's Atomic War Bride paved the way for nuclear anxiety cinema.

Global tensions erupt and war breaks out on the day of John and Maria’s wedding, thrusting the newlyweds into a world transformed by fear, mobilisation, and the ultimate threat of atomic destruction. As their idyllic hopes confront the brutal realities of conflict, Bulajić’s film confronts the true face of war.

Originally titled Rat (War), this powerful feature received a Golden Lion nomination at Venice Film Festival in 1960, but has since been largely forgotten and has never screened in the UK before.
