Cinema Restored

Ana Díez’s rarely screened debut explores a turbulent period in Spanish and Basque history through two old friends, one returning to a home he no longer recognises, the other who never left.

The film explores the impact of ETA, the armed organisation that waged a violent campaign for Basque independence, as well as the devastating effects of heroin addiction. It portrays people caught between political violence, social marginalisation and a rapidly changing Basque society.

Released in 1988, Ander eta Yul won Ana Díez the Goya Award for Best New Director in 1989, making her a pioneering figure in New Basque Cinema and the movement’s first woman director.

Presented by the Basque Film Archive, Spain. The film has been restored in 4K by L’Immagine Ritrovata from the original negative, under the supervision of director Ana Díez and cinematographer Gonzalo F. Berridi. The restoration was funded by EITB (Euskal Irrati Telebista) and the Basque Film Archive, with the support of the Basque Government.
