With Hasan in Gaza + Pop-Up Art and Charity Fundraiser (15*)

Chronic Youth Film Festival 2026

A young boy smiles in a crowd.

Kamal Aljafari’s experimental film retraces his 2001 trip to Gaza, where a search for a lost friend becomes a haunting journey.

What the Barbican Young Film Programmers 2026 say on With Hasan in Gaza:

"If we cannot meet physically, perhaps the tape will find you where you are now.

In 2001, Kamal Aljafari spent two days travelling around Gaza with a guide, Hasan, whose fate remains uncertain, searching for a long-lost friend from his time in prison.

Years later, Aljafari unearthed three miniDV tapes he shot during the trip. In his latest film, he uses these tapes to reimagine his journey as a voyage into a world that has since been erased by Israel's genocide.

What begins as an attempt to reconnect becomes a document of daily life under occupation, a testament to the resilience of the people of Gaza, and a reflection on the fragile act of returning."

Before and after the screening, stop by the Cinema 2 / 3 Foyer to find out more. We will also have pop-up stalls featuring local artists and grassroots campaigns fundraising for various Palestinian causes.
